Türkiye in the Fight against Climate Change: Economic and Political Impacts of the European Green Deal
İklim Değişikliği ile Mücadelede Türkiye: Avrupa Yeşil Mutabakatının Ekonomik ve Politik Etkileri

Abstract

Climate change refers to long-term changes in temperatures and weather patterns. Such changes may be caused by natural events and human factors. Unfortunately, human activities have been the main cause of climate change since the 1800s, especially due to the burning of fossil fuels. In order to create a more livable and sustainable world, society has understood the importance of climate change and is trying to prevent irreversible mistakes with some agreements. The first step our country took internationally in the fight against climate change was the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 2004. Later, the Paris Agreement was signed in 2016 and Türkiye’s 2053 carbon-neutral target was stated. With the entry into force of the 'European Green Deal' in 2019, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emission values in Europe by at least 55% by 2030, serious economic and political effects of climate change began to emerge. The following data were used in the study: European Green Deal, United Nations Climate Change, World Bank Foreign Trade, OECD and TÜİK database. In this study, the main milestones that Turkey has made progress within the framework of its adaptation efforts on climate change will be touched upon, the change trend in emission values of the last three years will be discussed and the extent to which the current situation meets the targets in adapting to the European Green Deal will be evaluated.
